Ergin Ataman clashes with Hapoel Tel Aviv owner over EuroLeague remarks
Panathinaikos was eliminated from the EuroLeague after a 81‑64 loss to Valencia, prompting coach Ergin Ataman to criticize point guard TJ Shorts during the halftime interview. In response, Hapoel Tel Aviv owner Ofer Janaj attacked Ataman on X, calling his comments disrespectful and questioning his authority.
Ataman replied in a press conference, asserting his three EuroLeague titles in the past five years and dismissing Janaj’s budget plans. He said the Israeli club’s projected €75 million (potentially €100 million) spending would not enable them to win the competition, stating, “You will never win the EuroLeague.” The exchange has heightened tensions in the European basketball community as Hapoel Tel Aviv is expected to become one of the league’s most expensive teams next season.
