Ergonomics and workspace setup to prevent neck and back pain
Improper workspace ergonomics and prolonged laptop use can lead to chronic physical discomfort, including headaches, neck stiffness, and shoulder or back pain. Because laptops combine the screen and keyboard into a single unit, users often work at a low screen height, forcing them to bend their heads and necks forward. This posture, sometimes referred to as ‘Tech Neck’, puts continuous strain on muscles and joints.
To mitigate these risks, experts suggest arranging workspaces to maximize efficiency and reduce unnecessary strain. Key recommendations include raising the laptop screen to eye level, using a separate keyboard and mouse for long sessions, ensuring proper back support, and taking frequent breaks to move and change positions.
