Eric Cantor named CEO of pharmaceutical lobby PhRMA

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has announced that former U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor will serve as its next president and CEO. Cantor is scheduled to assume the role on November 9.

Cantor, a Republican who represented Virginia’s 7th congressional district from 2000 to 2014, previously served as House majority leader. Since leaving Congress, he has worked as a managing director at Moelis & Company. PhRMA credited his legislative history, including support for the 21st Century Cures Act and the Medicare Part D program, as key qualifications.

He succeeds Stephen J. Ubl, who has led the organization since 2015. Ubl will remain with the group as a strategic adviser until mid-January to facilitate the leadership transition. The appointment comes as the pharmaceutical industry faces ongoing political pressure regarding drug pricing, biotechnology investment regulations, and the use of artificial intelligence in life sciences.
