Eric Chelle appointed to lead both Super Eagles and Nigeria U‑23 team

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Eric Chelle as head coach of the senior national team, the Super Eagles, and the under‑23 Olympic Eagles. The decision gives Chelle a dual role overseeing both squads.

Former senior team coach Finidi George criticised the move, arguing that managing the two sides simultaneously would place an enormous burden on Chelle and could distract from the development and preparation needed for the U‑23 side.

National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko defended the strategy, saying it forms part of a long‑term plan aimed at the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Dikko noted that Chelle’s contract and staff welfare have been enhanced, and that additional technical personnel will be provided whenever the teams’ fixtures overlap to maintain performance levels.
