Eric Clapton reflects on blues legacy and Robert Johnson influence
Marking the 60th anniversary of the seminal album *Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton*, the work is highlighted as a cornerstone of British blues, showcasing Clapton’s early electric guitar sound with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. The album’s impact helped cement Clapton’s reputation and inspired a generation of guitarists.
In a 2004 interview, Clapton admitted that despite a career built on the influence of early blues pioneer Robert Johnson, he still cannot replicate some of Johnson’s techniques, describing a particular passage in “Kind‑Hearted Woman Blues” as impossible for him to play. He later released the tribute album *Me and Mr. Johnson* to honor the Delta blues legend, reaffirming Johnson’s lasting impact on his music.
The reflections underscore Clapton’s long‑standing devotion to the blues tradition and his acknowledgment of its foundational figures.
