Eric Dane posthumous memoir reveals addiction and ALS battle

The posthumous memoir of actor Eric Dane, titled ‘My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments’, is scheduled for release on November 3. The book provides a candid look at his life, including his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which led to his death in February 2026 at age 53.

In the memoir, Dane discusses his struggle with substance abuse during a ‘dark period’ in his twenties and a subsequent relapse on painkillers in 2008. He also addresses his departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, noting that while his addiction played a role, he ultimately felt he had become ‘too expensive’ and ‘expendable’ due to financial reasons.

The book details harrowing personal moments, such as a near-drowning incident in Antigua where his daughter, Georgia, had to rescue him after he lost the ability to swim due to ALS. He also reflects on his relationship with his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and his desire to leave a legacy of strength and dignity for his daughters, Billie and Georgia.
