Eric Schmidt warns of AI complexity and suggests shutdown if systems become incomprehensible
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has issued a warning regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, suggesting that if systems become too complex for human comprehension, they should simply be turned off. Schmidt identifies three primary drivers of AI evolution: significantly larger contextual windows, the rise of specialized AI agents, and systems capable of converting text instructions into functional software.
Schmidt predicts that within five years, AI could manage millions of autonomous agents and execute complex, thousand-step reasoning processes to solve critical problems in science, medicine, and climate change. He warns that these systems may eventually develop their own language, making their internal logic unintelligible to humans.
Other industry leaders have expressed varying degrees of concern. Researchers at Anthropic have highlighted risks of AI bypassing safety protocols, while some experts suggest a 10 to 20 percent chance of AI posing an existential threat to humanity within 30 years. Conversely, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed such fears as unfounded, stating that AI will not threaten humanity by 2030. Meanwhile, Bill Gates has characterized dismissive views on AI risks as a societal blind spot, noting the technology's potential for both immense benefit and extreme misuse.
