Eric Wendt begins mission as new U.S. Ambassador to Albania

Eric Wendt, the new United States Ambassador to Albania, has officially begun his diplomatic mission in Tirana. Following the presentation of his credentials to President Bajram Begaj, Wendt held several high-level meetings, including with Prime Minister Edi Rama and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha.

During his Senate confirmation, Wendt emphasized priorities such as fighting corruption, organized crime, and drug trafficking. He specifically highlighted the importance of supporting SPAK as an independent and apolitical institution. The diplomatic engagement aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Albania, focusing on security cooperation within NATO, economic investment, and regional stability.

The arrival of Wendt, a retired general with a significant military and security background, marks the return of a formally appointed U.S. ambassador to the country after a three-year period. While the Albanian government views the mission as an opportunity to deepen bilateral ties and economic cooperation, opposition figures, including Sali Berisha, have expressed expectations for a more aggressive stance against criminal networks and political corruption.
