Eric Wendt begins mission as US Ambassador to Albania

Eric Wendt has officially begun his mission as the new United States Ambassador to Albania, presenting his credentials to President Bajram Begaj. This appointment ends a nearly three-year period during which the US Embassy in Tirana was without a confirmed head.

A retired US Army general with over 34 years of service, including leadership roles in NATO Special Operations, Wendt’s mandate will focus on several key priorities. These include strengthening defense and cybersecurity cooperation, promoting economic diplomacy, and supporting Albania’s fight against corruption and transnational organized crime. He has also expressed support for the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK).

In addition to the arrival of the new US Ambassador, Albania is undergoing diplomatic shifts in the region. Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha is moving forward with plans to rotate ambassadors in Pristina and Skopje, with Denion Meidani proposed for Pristina and Petrit Malaj for Skopje.
