The U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with a 51‑44 vote, making her the agency’s first permanent leader in nearly a year after the dismissal of Susan Monarez in August 2025. Senator Bill Cassidy initially questioned Schwartz’s willingness to resist political pressure but later said he had gained confidence after further discussions. The confirmation ends a period of acting leadership and places Schwartz at the helm of a critical public‑health institution during a time of heightened disease threats and political scrutiny.
