Ericeira protests erupt against European far-right meeting
Protests erupted in Ericeira, Portugal, as residents and demonstrators gathered to oppose the Patriots Academy, a meeting of the European far-right political family. The event, organized by the Patriots for Europe Foundation, brought together representatives from various radical right parties, including Fidesz, FPÖ, Lega, Rassemblement National, Vox, and Vlaams Belang.
Demonstrators, numbering between a hundred and several hundred, gathered near the Vila Galé Ericeira hotel. They carried signs and chanted slogans such as “na Ericeira não há espaço para o ódio” (in Ericeira there is no room for hate) and referenced the April 25 Revolution to protest against what they described as divisive and hateful discourse. Local organizers characterized the movement as a spontaneous, peaceful expression of democratic values by residents who wish to protect the town's multicultural identity.
André Ventura, leader of the Portuguese party Chega, attended the meeting and downplayed the protests, stating he is accustomed to such demonstrations. He emphasized the importance of the gathering for discussing issues like energy, housing, security, and immigration. Meanwhile, the Ericeira Parish Assembly issued a formal vote of condemnation and repudiation regarding the hosting of the academy in the town.
