Erich Honecker: 114th anniversary of the former East German leader's birth

The 114th anniversary of the birth of Erich Honecker, the former leader of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), marks a reflection on his political legacy. Born on August 25, 1912, in Neunkirchen, Honecker rose through the ranks of the Communist Party of Germany and later became a key figure in founding the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

Honecker served as the General Secretary of the SED from 1971 to 1989 and as the President of the GDR from 1976 to 1989. His leadership was characterized by a refusal to adopt the reforms proposed by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, a stance that contributed to his resignation in October 1989.

Following the fall of socialism in Eastern Europe, Honecker faced accusations of corruption and abuse of power. After seeking asylum in the Chilean embassy in Moscow in 1991, he was eventually deported to reunified Germany in 1992.
