Erich Honecker's role in Berlin Wall construction revealed

Newly discovered notes from former East German leader Erich Honecker provide fresh insights into the construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961. Honecker, who served as a construction manager during the initial sealing of the border, kept these personal records with the intention of writing an autobiography.

The documents reveal that while leader Walter Ulbricht had previously denied intentions to build a wall, a decision was reached following consultations in Moscow between August 3 and 5, 1961, involving the Warsaw Pact. Honecker's role involved directing construction crews and maintaining contact with the state leadership to monitor Western reactions.

Further research into Honecker's plans reveals a long-term vision known as ‘Mauer 2000’. During the 1980s, Honecker aimed to transform the existing barrier into a high-tech fortress equipped with infrared sensors, microwave technology, and radar. This project, assigned to the Military Technical Institute of the National People's Army, was intended to modernize the border defenses through the year 2000.
