Erick Thohir urges regional focus on 21 priority sports

Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir has called on regional governments to focus athlete development on 21 priority sports branches as outlined in the National Sports Big Design (DBON). This strategic alignment aims to synchronize regional programs with national goals, specifically targeting improved performance at the Olympic Games.

Thohir emphasized that while priority sports receive focused training, the government will continue to promote community sports through initiatives like expanded Car Free Day activities.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted the need for synergy between central and regional governments to elevate youth and sports sectors. Ahead of the 100th anniversary of the Youth Pledge in 2028, the Ministry is working to accelerate the Youth Bill (RUU Kepemudaan) to ensure youth development is integrated into regional functions. This effort is intended to leverage Indonesia's demographic bonus, given that approximately 130 million citizens are under the age of 30.
