Ericsson and Erillisverkot demonstrate 5G drone detection in Finland
Ericsson and Erillisverkot have demonstrated Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology, which utilizes 5G networks to detect, locate, and track drones in real time. During a technology demonstration held from September 16–18 in Helsinki, including a live trial at Vuosaari Harbor, the companies showed how mobile network radio signals can be used to create a sensing layer for monitoring airspace.
This approach turns existing mobile-network sites into a distributed sensing platform. By analyzing how radio signals reflect off objects, the system can identify small, low-altitude drones that may not be connected to a network or emitting their own signals. The technology is designed to complement traditional sensors rather than replace them, providing enhanced situational awareness for ports, borders, airports, critical infrastructure, and large public events.
Ericsson’s ISAC development integrates its Massive MIMO 5G radio platform and beam steering with specialized edge computing, signal processing, and sensing software. The system can also utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve target detection and classification.
