Ericsson introduces ISAC system for drone detection via mobile networks
Ericsson has unveiled the Ericsson ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication) System, a technology designed to detect and track moving objects, such as drones, over large areas. The system utilizes existing mobile networks to provide situational awareness, even for objects that are not connected to the network.
The solution aims to address security challenges posed by small, low-cost drones used in organized crime, sabotage, and armed conflicts. These drones are often difficult to detect due to their size and low-altitude flight patterns. By using sensing-capable 5G radios, edge computing, AI, and signal processing, the system can close detection gaps that traditional infrastructure might miss.
Commercial rollout will occur in phases. Small-scale, sensing-only pilot projects with selected customers are scheduled for 2027. Broader deployments are expected to follow in 2028. As the technology evolves toward 6G, integrated communication functions will be added to the system.
