Ericsson, MediaTek, and AT&T complete North American 5G Advanced mobility test
Ericsson, MediaTek, and AT&T have successfully completed North America’s first live network test of Low-latency Mobility (LTM) technology. Utilizing Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN) on AT&T’s network, the trial supports L1/L2 Triggered Mobility, a new switching mechanism introduced in 3GPP Release 18 (5G Advanced).
The test results demonstrated that LTM can reduce data interruption time during base station handovers by up to 25% compared to existing Layer 3 mobility. This reduction aims to provide a seamless connection experience, which is essential for emerging real-time applications such as extended reality (XR/VR), time-critical communications, immersive video conferencing, and cloud-based applications.
Beyond consumer use, the technology is a key component of Ericsson’s 5G-Advanced Critical IoT solutions. By minimizing connection interruptions, LTM supports AI-driven workloads—including real-time XR scene reconstruction, edge-assisted perception, industrial automation, and connected vehicle analysis—that require continuous data exchange and predictable latency during device movement.
