Eridson Garcia upsets Alan Chaves in Newark

Eridson Garcia secured a major upset victory against the previously undefeated Alan Chaves at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Competing on the Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Damian Knyba card, the Dominican fighter dominated the 10-round lightweight bout, winning by unanimous decision with scores of 99-87, 99-88, and 98-88.

Chaves, an Argentinian prospect supported by Matchroom Boxing, suffered his first professional loss, dropping his record to 22-1 with 19 knockouts. Garcia, who improved to 24-2, utilized his southpaw stance and body work to control the pace. Chaves was knocked down four times during the fight: once in the second round, twice in the fifth, and once in the ninth.

The victory earned Garcia the WBO Latino and IBF International lightweight titles. The performance was noted as a significant setback for Chaves’s career momentum and Matchroom’s lightweight development plans.
