Erik Donner elected as new SPD faction leader in Mainz

The SPD faction in the Mainz City Council has appointed Erik Donner as its new chairman. The 38-year-old software developer and former transport policy spokesperson takes over the role following the departure of Kathleen Herr, who resigned her position for personal reasons.

Donner will be supported by deputy chairpersons Sissi Westrich and Dr. Matthias Dietz-Lenssen. With this appointment and the addition of three new council members, the faction has completed its personnel restructuring. Donner emphasized that despite difficult budgetary conditions, the faction will focus on social cohesion, affordable housing, job security, and equal opportunity.

The leadership change follows a period of political turbulence for the Mainz SPD, including the loss of the mayor's office in 2022 and subsequent shifts in local leadership.
