Erik Lamela appointed utility staff for Monterrey ahead of Apertura 2026

Former Argentina international Erik Lamela, the 2021 FIFA Puskás award winner, has been registered by Club de Fútbol Monterrey (Rayados) as a "utilero" for the Apertura 2026 season. The role places him on the club’s coaching staff under manager Matías Almeyda, with Lamela working toward a UEFA Pro licence and gaining experience as a field assistant.

Lamela, who previously played for River Plate, Roma, Tottenham, Sevilla and AEK Athens, joined Monterrey’s technical team after retiring at 32. Almeyda highlighted Lamela’s football insight, noting that even a fraction of his on‑field contribution could benefit the coaching staff. Lamela’s appointment reflects a formal pathway for former players to transition into coaching roles within Liga MX.
