Erik Lamela Named Equipment Manager for Monterrey Over License Hurdle
Former Argentine international Erik Lamela retired from professional football in 2025 and joined the technical staff of Matías Almeyda at Rayados de Monterrey in Mexico’s Liga MX. Because Mexican regulations require a UEFA Pro licence for an official assistant‑coach role, the club registered Lamela as the team’s equipment manager (utilero) so he can sit on the bench and work alongside Almeyda.
Lamela, a 2021 FIFA Puskás Award winner who previously played for River Plate, Roma, Tottenham Hotspur, Sevilla and AEK Athens, is currently studying for the UEFA Pro licence. The workaround allows him to contribute to Monterrey’s coaching team despite the licensing restriction.
