Erik Lira returns to Cruz Azul after failed AS Monaco transfer
Mexican midfielder Erik Lira has returned to training with Cruz Azul following the collapse of his transfer to AS Monaco. The deal, valued at approximately $9.2 million plus variables, failed during the final moments of the French transfer window because Monaco could not secure the departure of American striker Folarin Balogun to Everton, which was necessary to free up a non-EU player slot.
AS Monaco manager Filipe Luís has expressed strong continued interest in the player, describing Lira as “top, top, top, top, top” and stating that he will continue to push for his signing in future transfer windows. Monaco's sporting director, Carlos Aviña, noted that while interest remains, any future move will depend on squad needs, budget, and available non-EU slots.
Lira, who has a contract with Cruz Azul until June 2029, is currently evaluating other professional options, including a proposal from Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates and potential opportunities in other European leagues where registration periods remain open.
