Erik Lira transfer to AS Monaco collapses due to registration issues
The transfer of Mexican midfielder Erik Lira from Cruz Azul to AS Monaco has collapsed due to administrative constraints in the French transfer market. Despite a verbal agreement and advanced negotiations involving a fee estimated between 8 and 9.2 million dollars, the move could not be finalized before the deadline.
The failure was caused by Monaco’s inability to register Lira as a non-EU player. The club had intended to free up a non-EU slot by selling American striker Folarin Balogun to Everton, but the deal failed to conclude in time due to unfinalized contract terms. AS Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro expressed regret over the situation, noting that the club had intended to bring Lira to the Principality.
Following the failed move, Lira is expected to remain with Cruz Azul for the Apertura 2026 tournament. The club has requested his return to training by September 4. While his immediate future is in Liga MX, possibilities for a move to other leagues or a return to Europe during the winter market remain under consideration.
