Erika Hilton becomes most voted woman in Brazil's Chamber of Deputies

Erika Hilton, a 33-year-old Black transgender legislator from the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), has become the most voted woman in the history of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies. Securing 1,596,472 votes, Hilton significantly increased her previous electoral support of 256,903 votes.

Her reelection occurs within a complex political landscape. While Hilton has focused on defending the rights of women, Black populations, and the LGBTQIA+ community, conservative figures also saw major gains. Nikolas Ferreira of the Liberal Party became the most voted federal deputy in the country's history with over 3.1 million votes, and Lucas Pavanato also secured over 3 million votes in São Paulo.

During her tenure, Hilton has been a prominent progressive voice, advocating for labor reforms such as reducing the work week and presiding over the Committee for the Defense of Women's Rights. The contrasting results between Hilton and conservative candidates like Ferreira suggest a Congress divided on issues regarding gender, sexual diversity, labor rights, and education.
