Erika Hilton faces political hostility during Brazilian reelection bid

Erika Hilton, a 34-year-old federal deputy for the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), is facing significant hostility from conservative sectors in Brazil during her reelection campaign. Hilton, who was previously the first trans and Afro-descendant woman in the São Paulo legislature, has become a prominent target of political violence and transfobia.

The São Paulo Electoral Court (TRE-SP) has intervened multiple times to address attacks against her. The court recently ordered Bolsonarista candidate Lucas Pavanato to halt paid promotions of a video labeling Hilton a 'dictator project.' Additionally, the court ordered the removal of a video by comedian Paulo Souza that used transphobic language and sexualized insults.

In another instance, Abilio Brunini, a Bolsonarista mayor from Cuiabá, signed a public retraction agreement following a three-year investigation into gender-based political violence and transfobia. Hilton has stated her candidacy is driven by a desire to represent the working class, Black populations, and the LGTBIQ+ community.
