Eğrikapı gate holds historical and religious significance in Istanbul

Eğrikapı, a historic gate located where the land walls of Istanbul meet the Golden Horn, holds significant religious and historical importance. During the Byzantine era, the gate was known as ‘Porta Kaligaria,’ a name derived from the local production of ‘kaliga’ boots used by Roman soldiers.

Historically, this section of the walls was considered one of the weakest defensive points during the Late Byzantine period. The area is notably associated with the early Arab sieges of the 7th century under the Umayyad Caliphate. During these conflicts, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, aged 90, participated in the siege and was martyred; his body was reportedly carried to the point closest to the walls.

The site also features the Kazasker İvaz Efendi Mosque, which is believed to be the final work of the renowned architect Mimar Sinan.
