Erin Goeres releases new history of the 1066 succession crisis
Dr. Erin Goeres, an Associate Professor in Scandinavian Studies at UCL, has released a new historical work titled ‘Nineteen Days in Autumn. A New History of 1066’. The book examines the succession crisis triggered by the death of Edward the Confessor in January 1066.
The narrative focuses on the intense period between the battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings. It explores the motivations of key figures, including Harold II, King Haraldr Sigurðarson of Norway, and William, Duke of Normandy, as well as the impact of the conflict on common people.
By utilizing sources from England, Normandy, and Scandinavia, Goeres analyzes the events that led to the deaths of two monarchs and the conclusion of Anglo-Scandinavian rule in England.
