Eritrea cataract campaign treats over 400 patients

From 20 to 26 July 2026, a Sudanese Al‑Beser Ophthalmology team collaborated with Eritrean medical experts to perform cataract and other eye surgeries at Keren Referral Hospital. After screening about 3,000 patients, 406 received surgery while others were provided with eyeglasses. The operation was part of Eritrea’s national campaign to control blindness, continuing a series of 15 similar missions by the Al‑Beser team.

Alem Zekarias, head of Blindness Control at the Ministry of Health, highlighted the need for early treatment of cataracts, trachoma and related diseases and urged the public to seek professional care. Dr. Yafet Hailemicael, medical director of Keren Referral Hospital, praised the Sudanese team for its contribution and noted the program’s ongoing role in reducing preventable blindness in the country.
