Eritrea Expands Pre‑Primary Schools in Southern Region

A conference was held in Mendefera on 11 July 2026 to accelerate the expansion of pre‑primary and junior schools in Eritrea’s Southern Region. Governor Habteab Tesfatsion announced that the regional administration and local area officials have prepared land for constructing new pre‑school facilities, aiming to improve access to education for children in their own communities.

Over the past ten years the region had 131 pre‑schools serving about 12,000 students. Officials reported that last year new pre‑schools were opened in 416 villages, doubling student enrolment. The Southern Region now operates 1,106 schools ranging from pre‑schools to high schools, and officials urged parents to enrol their children to take advantage of the expanded opportunities.
