Eritrea marks 65th anniversary of independence struggle with global celebrations

Eritrean communities worldwide have held various cultural events to mark the 65th anniversary of the start of the nation’s armed struggle for independence, known as Bahti Meskerem.

In Asmara, the capital, a grand cultural evening was held at Cinema Roma featuring songs, poems, and dramatic performances. The event, organized by the Commission of Culture and Sports and the National Holidays Coordinating Committee, was broadcast live on Eritrean Television to reach audiences nationwide.

In the diaspora, celebrations took place in Chicago, where community members gathered to connect younger generations with their national history. Similarly, Eritrean nationals in Saudi Arabia held commemorative events in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Namas. In Riyadh, community leaders discussed the responsibility of preserving independence, while in Jeddah, the Consul General emphasized supporting the National Martyrs Trust Fund. These gatherings featured artistic performances depicting the historical significance of the 1961 struggle launched at Mount Adal.
