Yeni Parti draws former CHP officials in political shift

Several long‑time members of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) have resigned and joined the newly founded Yeni Parti. Burhaniye mayor Ali Kemal Deveciler left the CHP together with fifteen municipal council members, Kırıkkale mayor Ahmet Önal announced his departure from the CHP and his membership in Yeni Parti, and Derince mayor Sertif Gökçe resigned with eighteen council members to join the new party.

Yeni Parti leader Özgür Özel has held multiple public events, including the groundbreaking of a cultural centre and cemevi in Mamak, and has repeatedly stressed a new political direction, promising to secure Alevi “rızalık” if the party attains power. He also marked the 500‑day anniversary of the 19 March 2023 coup attempt, stating that Turkey has not surrendered. The party’s rhetoric criticises the “mutlak butlan” court decision that it says triggered the CHP resignations. These developments indicate a notable fragmentation of the CHP and the emergence of Yeni Parti as a growing opposition force in Turkey.
