Erkrath schools restart in temporary container village
Following a devastating fire in mid-May that destroyed two school buildings in Erkrath, Germany, approximately 1,200 students are beginning the new school year in a temporary facility. The new site, dubbed 'Schuldorf' (school village), is a two-story container complex located on a nearby sports field and consists of roughly 600 containers.
Police investigations determined that the fire was triggered by a short circuit in a rooftop photovoltaic system, which caused the blaze to spread rapidly. To assist with organization, the facility uses color-coded glass door strips to distinguish between the Realschule (green) and the Gymnasium (blue) in the Hochdahl district. While the old school complex is being demolished, some historical items, such as decades-old wall maps, have been salvaged for use in the new location.
