Ermin Mahmić shines at World Cup as Bosnian striker, near‑move to Vojvodina halted

Ermin Mahmić, a 21‑year‑old forward, rose from Austria’s fourth division three years ago to score twice for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup after coming on as a substitute. He had previously played for Austria’s U‑21 side before committing his senior career to Bosnia, a decision praised by his former Lafnitz coach Robert Weinstabl. Mahmić spent the previous season with Czech club Slovan Liberec, appearing in 30 matches, netting eight goals and providing four assists.

Scouts from Serbian club Vojvodina travelled to watch him in Austria and later met his father, who initially agreed to the transfer. After ten days the father withdrew, sending Mahmić back to Liberec. Vojvodina’s scouts noted weaknesses in his game but admired his mentality. His market value is now estimated at €5 million, with interest from clubs such as RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Red Bull Salzburg.

Mahmić’s World Cup performance has made him a hot topic in Bosnia and attracted attention from top European leagues.
