Ernest Bai Koroma returns to Sierra Leone after two-year exile

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Freetown on September 6, 2026, ending more than two years of political exile in Nigeria. His return follows the Sierra Leonean government's July 2026 decision to drop treason charges related to a failed military uprising in November 2023.

Koroma was accompanied on his flight by Nigerian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The return was facilitated by diplomatic efforts involving the Nigerian government and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Upon arrival, Koroma was received by President Julius Maada Bio and other officials. The homecoming is viewed as a significant step toward national reconciliation and political stability in Sierra Leone as the country prepares for the 2028 presidential elections.
