Ernest Shackleton’s ship Quest photographed on ocean floor

Researchers from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution deployed submersibles—including the ROV Falcon and the DSV Alvin—to capture the first close‑up images of the wreck of Quest, the final vessel of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. The ship lies about 1,280 feet (390 m) deep in the Labrador Sea off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Shackleton died aboard Quest in 1922; the vessel later served under Norwegian owners before being crushed by ice floes and sinking in 1962. The images show the hull, deck, portholes and broken main mast still recognizable, though draped with abandoned fishing nets. The wreck now supports pink corals and a variety of fish such as cod, redfish and wolf fish. The team is using photogrammetry to create a three‑dimensional digital model for further scientific study.
