Ghana grants BECE candidates amnesty for school self-placement

The Ghanaian government has announced an amnesty for 35,887 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates to participate in the self-placement process under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). This measure follows reports that over 55,000 students failed to secure placement in Senior High Schools (SHS) or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions due to failing core subjects, specifically English Language or Mathematics.

Deputy Education Minister Dr. Clement Apaak encouraged the affected students to utilize this opportunity to continue their education. However, education stakeholders have expressed significant concern regarding the situation. The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) has called for urgent, clear pathways for these students to prevent them from falling out of the education system entirely, suggesting options such as absorption into institutions via remedial programs or returning to basic school levels.

Additionally, former National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) President Angel Carbonu warned of potential social consequences, noting that thousands of young people could end up on the streets without a structured opportunity to improve their results and progress to the next level of education.
