Ernesto de León Stadium reopens after architectural renovation
The Ernesto de León Stadium in Durazno is reopening following an extensive infrastructure and equipment renovation. The project, driven by the Government of Durazno through its Department of Sport and Recreation, aims to restore the venue to high international standards for sports and events.
A central focus of the renovation was the preservation of the architectural heritage, specifically the ceiling designed by engineer Eladio Dieste. Project director Santiago Carbajal noted that the intervention sought to enhance the existing patrimony rather than innovate over the original design.
Key upgrades include the installation of 2,000 new seats, a reconfigured technical area with dedicated benches, and a floating floor system. The facility is now equipped for various disciplines, including basketball (meeting FIBA dimensions), handball, volleyball, futsal, and newcom, featuring new LED lighting and electronic scoreboards.
