Ernesto Sábato delivers CONADEP report to Raúl Alfonsín
On September 20, 1984, writer Ernesto Sábato delivered the findings of the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP) to Argentine President Raúl Alfonsín. The report, consisting of two volumes, documented the atrocities committed during the military dictatorship, including the existence of 340 clandestine detention centers and 8,961 cases of disappearances.
The delivery occurred during a period of political tension as the newly restored democracy sought to investigate human rights violations. This era marked a transition from the repressive atmosphere of the dictatorship to a period of intellectual and academic reopening. Many scholars who operated in private study groups during the years of military surveillance later became influential figures in the University of Buenos Aires, shaping the country's academic landscape following the return to democratic rule.
