Ernesto Villegas presented credentials as Venezuela’s permanent ambassador to UNESCO
On 29 July 2024, Venezuelan diplomat Ernesto Villegas formally presented his letters of credence to UNESCO Director‑General Khaled El‑Enany in Paris, officially becoming Venezuela’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations agency for education, science and culture. During the ceremony Villegas thanked UNESCO and the broader UN system for their solidarity after the dual earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June, and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the UN Charter and UNESCO’s founding principles.
After the credential ceremony Villegas held a working meeting with Lidia Arthur Brito, the Director‑General’s adjoint for Africa and External Relations, to discuss bilateral agendas. The delegation accompanying Villegas included UNESCO regional director Anne Lemaistre, business officer Martha Bolívar, ministers‑counselor Pedro Calzadilla and Carmelo Borrego, and Venezuelan intellectual Andrés Bansart. UNESCO’s Director‑General welcomed the ambassador, noting Venezuela’s historic contribution to the organization.
