Errol Spence Jr. says Sebastian Fundora was his first choice before confirming Tim Tszyu comeback

Errol Spence Jr. will end a nearly three‑year layoff in July with a comeback bout against Tim Tszyu in Australia. The fight is set at a 158‑lb catch‑weight and will be Spence’s first match since his stoppage loss to Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight title in 2023.

Spence told Fox Sports that the Tszyu fight was not the toughest opponent he could have pursued. He said he had been targeting WBC and WBO super‑welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora before the Tszyu deal materialised, adding, “I’m not crazy, but I was looking at Fundora, I was looking at top names.” Fundora, who won the WBC and WBO titles by beating Tszyu in March 2024, remains a leading figure at 154 pounds.

Spence also dismissed concerns about “ring rust,” insisting that good gym work would translate to fight performance. A successful showing against Tszyu could revive talks with Fundora later in the year.
