Irun: Two arrested for suspected terrorism in Basque Country

The Ertzaintza has arrested a 34-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman in Irun on suspicion of terrorism. The individuals, described as being linked to radical, dissident sectors of the abertzale left, surrendered voluntarily at the Irun police station accompanied by their lawyer.

The investigation originated from a September 26 traffic stop in Eskoriatza, where police identified three individuals carrying sensitive information regarding security forces and the potential location of a site containing weapons and explosives. The suspects are noted to have relevant criminal records.

The PNV party has expressed “absolute concern” regarding the arrests, stating that such actions could return society to “past times” that were believed to be overcome. Meanwhile, the organization Aske has condemned the arrests, labeling them a “criminalization campaign” against the Jardun Coordinator.

The detainees will be transferred to the Audiencia Nacional for further investigation.
