Ertzaintza police vehicles use unique license plate identifiers
Vehicles belonging to the Ertzaintza, the Basque regional police, utilize a specific license plate format that distinguishes them from standard Spanish vehicles. Unlike the common four-digit and three-letter combination, these plates incorporate a Gothic-style 'E' followed by a numbering system.
The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has confirmed that this specific combination is reserved exclusively for the Basque police force as part of a group of special plates used by various administrative and law enforcement bodies. This identification is an official designation rather than a personalized or aesthetic choice. Other Spanish security forces use similar specialized identifiers, such as 'PGC' for the Guardia Civil, 'CNP' for the National Police, and various combinations like 'ET' or 'EA' for the military.
