Erzgebirgische Holzkunst Gahlenz files for insolvency

Erzgebirgische Holzkunst Gahlenz GmbH RuT, a renowned German manufacturer of traditional wooden Christmas decorations, has filed for insolvency. The application was submitted to the Chemnitz District Court on August 7, 2026. Reinhard Klose of the law firm Flöther & Wissing has been appointed as the preliminary insolvency administrator.

The company, based in Oederan, Saxony, is internationally recognized for its large-scale specialty crafts, including several Guinness World Record holders. These include a 14.6-meter-tall Christmas pyramid built for the Dresden Striezelmarkt in 1997 and a 7.14-meter-tall nutcracker located at its factory gates. Its products are featured at Christmas markets across Germany, as well as in Tokyo, Japan, and various locations in the United States, including Texas and Alabama.

Approximately 30 employees currently face job uncertainty. While the specific reasons for the insolvency have not been disclosed, recent financial data showed a modest surplus of approximately 132,000 euros for the 2023/24 fiscal year. The company has a history spanning nearly 100 years, having operated as VEB Raum- und Tafelschmuck Gahlenz during the GDR era.
