Erzsi Kovács recounts political persecution and loss of partner

Hungarian singer Erzsi Kovács faced significant personal tragedy during the Rákosi era due to her relationship with Sándor Szűcs, a former Újpesti Dózsa footballer. The couple attempted to flee to Austria to escape political pressure and surveillance by the State Security Authority, but they were captured by an undercover agent.

Following their capture, Kovács was sentenced to four years in prison. Szűcs faced a more severe fate; he was sentenced to death in a show trial and executed in 1951. Kovács only learned of Szűcs's execution after her release from prison.
