NASA's DART kinetic‑impact test confirms asteroid deflection, but early detection remains key
The 2022 NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) successfully altered the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos by means of a kinetic impact, demonstrating that such a method can be used to divert a potentially hazardous asteroid if it is detected with sufficient lead time. The European Space Agency’s Hera mission, launched to study the aftermath of the impact, will provide data to refine deflection techniques and assess the asteroid’s response.
Scientists stress that early detection is the limiting factor: thousands of near‑Earth objects are monitored, but many smaller bodies could go unnoticed until they are close to Earth. Ongoing research includes gravitational‑tractor concepts, ion‑beam propulsion and, in extreme scenarios, controlled nuclear devices, all of which remain experimental. No immediate impact threat has been identified; the asteroid 1997 NC1 will pass safely by Earth on 27 June 2026 at a distance of about 2.56 million km, and the well‑known asteroid Apophis will fly by in 2029 without colliding. Researchers emphasize continued surveillance and technology development to protect the planet from future threats.
