ESA initiates studies for future European space station

The European Space Agency (ESA) has initiated preliminary studies to determine the feasibility of constructing and operating a future European orbital station in low Earth orbit (LEO). This initiative is part of ESA’s strategic planning for the period following the decommissioning of the International Space Station (ISS).

ESA has awarded contracts to two industrial consortia to conduct parallel conceptual studies. One consortium is led by Airbus Defence and Space and the other by OHB, with both involving additional industrial and institutional partners. These studies, categorized as Pre-Phase A, aim to evaluate the technical, programmatic, and financial viability of a European-led station.

The research will explore various architectures, infrastructure requirements, transport, and operational services. The goal is to assess how European industry can play a central role in developing next-generation orbital infrastructure while maintaining a permanent European presence in space. ESA is also considering alternative options, such as utilizing commercial stations or participating in American-led commercial orbital projects.
