JUICE spacecraft completes successful Earth flyby for Jupiter mission
The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, known as JUICE, successfully completed a gravity assist flyby of Earth on September 28, 2026. Passing approximately 8,640 kilometers above the Indian Ocean, the spacecraft utilized Earth’s gravity to adjust its trajectory and increase its velocity by 3.5 kilometers per second.
This maneuver is a critical component of the mission’s long-term strategy to conserve fuel. By using planetary gravity assists—including previous encounters with the Moon and Venus—the spacecraft can reach the outer solar system without the massive propellant requirements of a direct flight. The successful flyby deflected JUICE’s path by approximately 20 degrees.
During the encounter, JUICE’s ten scientific instruments were used to collect data and calibrate sensors. The spacecraft captured high-resolution images of Earth, including parts of Africa and Madagascar, as well as the Moon. The mission is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter in July 2031, with the ultimate goal of studying the planet and its icy moons, Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto, to investigate potential habitability.
