ESAMEA warns of housing crisis for people with disabilities in Greece
The Panhellenic Association of People with Disabilities (ESAMEA) has raised alarms regarding the housing crisis facing people with disabilities in Greece. The organization reports that many individuals with chronic or rare conditions are facing evictions, home foreclosures, and unsustainable rent increases without adequate institutional protection.
ESAMEA highlighted several cases through its ‘Claiming Together’ service, including an individual in Athens with a neoplasm who narrowly avoided losing their primary residence over an 800 euro credit card debt, and a person in Tripoli who was permitted to remain in their home after a fund purchased the property following an auction. Similar struggles are reported across Evia, Chalkidiki, Attica, and Crete.
The association is actively petitioning the Ministry of National Economy and Finance to allow for loan repayments to be scaled according to household income, noting that current required installments often exceed total family earnings.
