Esbjerg completes urban renewal and new green spaces
Esbjerg has completed a major urban renewal project in the Bymidte Vest area, transforming the landscape from Kongensgade to Havnegade. The initiative, which began in 2021, focuses on integrating nature, climate adaptation, and urban life.
A key feature of the project is the creation of Kleveparken on a former parking lot at the corner of Stormgade and Havnegade. This new green space includes paths and vegetation designed to connect the city center more closely with the harbor. Additionally, Stormgade has been updated with greenery and rainwater management solutions, while the western part of Kongensgade features new paving, green islands, and reduced traffic.
The design draws inspiration from the Wadden Sea (Vadehavet), reflected in the choice of planting and coastal landscape elements. Kurt Bjerrum, chairman of the Plan, City & Local Community Committee, stated that the goal was to create connections that improve movement and provide new reasons for people to stay in the area.
The new urban spaces will be officially inaugurated on Wednesday, October 7.
