ESC Congress research examines anticoagulant and aspirin use

Researchers presented new findings at the ESC Congress regarding the use of anticoagulants and antiplatelet therapy for cardiovascular patients.

One study conducted by researchers from South Korea suggests that oral anticoagulants may be beneficial for patients with atrial fibrillation who possess an intermediate risk of stroke, expanding upon existing guidelines that primarily recommend them for high-risk patients.

Additionally, discussions at the congress addressed whether aspirin (ASS) is strictly necessary following a ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). While current guidelines typically recommend a combination therapy of aspirin with prasugrel or ticagrelor for twelve months following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to prevent further cardiovascular events, the necessity of aspirin remains a subject of clinical investigation.
